  • Lavender or other fragrance oil

Also:

  • Sewing Machine (duh lol)
  • Iron
  • Measuring 1/2 cup/100ml spoon

Start with the muslin insert

  1. Make sure your muslin is washed and pressed well.
  2. Fold length ways and press again right sides together
  3. Sew a 1/4 inch seam or as close to the edge as you like on 2 sides back tracking at beginning and end
  4. Turn right side out.
  5. mark intervals of about 2.5 inches on the muslin
  6. Take the rice you perfumed already with fragrance oil (you may want to do this over night in a tin or bottle)
  7. pour 1/2 a cup/100mls into the muslin insert, pin and sew along the closest marked line, back track at each end. Be sure to pin as close to the rice as possible to prevent it travelling up as you are trying to sew. You should have 10-11 of these.
  8. Seam the top and set to one side

The cover:

  1. Join the two pieces together as shown with a 1/4 inch seam.
  2. Fold a 1/4 inch on the smaller piece, press, fold again press. Seam close to the edges of each fold.
  3. Fold wrong sides together and press.
  4. Open out your piece. Find the middle of the left half and create a button hole in the lip suitable for your button.
  5. Now get out your ribbon and cut in half. Mark with a pin 7 inches in on each piece.
  6. On the right side of your piece measure 1.25 inches from the edge and 3/4 of an inch from the centre fold and mark, top and bottom with pins
  7. Also measure 3/4′ of an inch in from each end and mark.

Adding the ribbon

  1. Lay your ribbon on top of the piece using the pins either side as guides, 1.25 inches in from one side 3/4 inch from the center fold. Make sure the marked 7 inches of ribbon fall on the same side and flush with the end of the piece.
  2. Sew the ribbon on box stitching at each end and remembering to leave the margins.
  3. Pin the ribbons inside the piece and fold right sides together.
  4. Sew a 1/2 inch seam along both raw ends.
  5. Turn, push corners out and press well
  6. Add your button to the inside lip
  7. Put the muslin rice insert inside and try it on for size!

Using it First off you can heat up just the insert or the whole thing providing all the materials you used are microwave safe. DO NOT wash the insert, it’s rice, it will cook lol. CAUTION: don’t over heat or you may burn yourself or others. Don’t leave the microwave unattended, check at regular intervals. That said: I place mine in the microwave for 1 min 30 secs 900 watt. Adjust accordingly for your own wattage. To wear, place on back or front and tie at side, crossing ribbons if you wish. It can be worn under clothes. It will stay warm for around half an hourand is infinetely reheatable really. You can also tie it round over limbs as a heat pack.

If you make this please let me know! I’d love to see.
